The Inner Landscape
Check-In
A moment to notice where you are
Grounded Flow
The Storm
The Fog

Your nervous system is always responding to the world around you — shifting between states of openness, activation, and withdrawal. Most of the time, these shifts happen below conscious awareness.

This check-in is a simple way to pause and notice. There are no right or wrong answers. You're just observing what's true for you right now.

It takes about two minutes.

This tool is informed by Stephen Porges' Polyvagal Theory and inspired by the applied clinical work of Deb Dana.
Step 1 of 4
What does your body feel like right now?
Take a breath. Scan from your head down to your feet. Notice without judging.
Settled, open, at ease
Breath moves freely. Muscles feel soft. There's a sense of being here.
Tense, restless, buzzing
Tight chest or jaw. Heart feels fast. An urge to move, fix, or get away.
Heavy, numb, disconnected
Hard to feel much of anything. Limbs feel weighted. Energy is low or absent.
Step 2 of 4
What's the emotional weather like inside?
Not what you think you should feel — what's actually there.
Calm, curious, or gently open
There's room to feel. Things may not be perfect, but you're present with what is.
Anxious, frustrated, or on edge
Emotions feel sharp, urgent, or hard to contain. Something needs to happen.
Flat, empty, or far away
Feelings are muted or hard to reach. You might feel like you're behind glass.
Step 3 of 4
What are your thoughts doing?
Notice the pace and tone of your thinking — not the content, just the pattern.
Clear, flexible, able to take things in
You can think and also let go. Your mind doesn't feel like it's running the show.
Racing, looping, or planning nonstop
Hard to slow down. Replaying conversations, running scenarios, anticipating threats.
Blank, foggy, or hard to focus
Thoughts trail off. Concentration takes effort. Mind feels thick or absent.
Step 4 of 4
What's your impulse right now?
If you could do anything in this moment without consequence — what's the pull?
Connect, create, or be present
You might want to reach out, make something, or simply stay in this moment.
Fight, fix, flee, or control
The pull is to take action — confront something, escape, or seize the reins.
Withdraw, hide, or disappear
The pull is inward — to shut down, go small, or check out entirely.
